A fine contemporary oil copy after the original by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly PRA (9 April 1879 – 5 January 1972), showing a beautiful Burmese girl, in fine traditional dress, sitting gracefully on the floor. Kelly’s fame as an artist was cemented by his series of portraits of this girl, Shan Princess Sao Ohn Nyunt.
In 1931, the young woman accompanied her cousin Sao Ohn Kya, the Sawbwa of Hsipaw, to London to attend the Roundtable Conferences on constitutional reform in Burma and India.
Kelly wrote that the princess was homesick for her Shan state, and that, when he encountered her at a reception, she was nearly “bored to tears” by England and its abominable weather.
This portrait has been signed and dated by the N. K. Day in the lower right corner and presented in a contemporary box frame with black velvet slip.
On canvas board.There is a light scratch across the woman's left arm and some other light scuffing. Then frame has general dirtying.
