Artist Biography
Muriel Grace George was born on 18 February 1925 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, U.S.A., the daughter of Harold George (4 April 1895 – 6 May 1973), a plasterer originally from Ipswich, Suffolk, and his Irish-born wife, Elsie Ruth (née Adams, 16 January 1899 – 1943). The family returned to the UK in 1931, and by 1939 were living at 95 Goudhurst Road, Bromley, Kent. Muriel won a scholarship to the Woolwich School of Art. Following the death of her mother in 1943, she left home to continue her studies at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, training as an illustrator under the artist Francis John Minton (1917–1957). In 1947, through the Anglo-French Art Centre in London, she met Tom Mallin, whom she married in Paddington, London, in 1949. They had two sons, including the artist Rupert Mallin (born 1953). In 1955, the family moved to The Oak, 10 Snow Hill, Clare, Suffolk. During the 1960s, Muriel transitioned from illustration to landscape painting and also taught part-time. After her husband’s death in Clare in 1977, Muriel relocated in 1988 to 402 London Road South, Lowestoft, also in Suffolk. She became a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle and exhibited with them in 1994. Muriel Grace Mallin died in Lowestoft on 30 June 2002. She signed her artwork variously as Muriel George, Muriel Mallin, or using the initials MGM.
