Description

A crisp engraving with etching of a battle scene between Protestants and Catholics in France in 1562, the year war broke out after decades of tension after the massacre of Vassy. By Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) after Philips Wouvermans (1619-1668). Presented glazed in a cream mount and a nineteenth-century Hogarth-style frame. Inscribed with the title 'Guerre des Huguenots sous Charles IX en 1562' in plate below the image. Inscribed in plate to the lower left and right edges with the names of the artists. Originally published as Plate 24 in Moyreau's 'Oeuvres de Philippe Wouwermens Hollandois'. Original date of 1737 inscribed in plate. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some mild foxing and discolouration. There are marks and dents to the frame, most notably to the lower corners, and some gapping at the join at the lower-left corner. Overall well-presented and in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) was a French engraver and publisher of prints. He was born in Orleans, Saint-Paul parish. Having gone up to Paris, he became a pupil of Bon Boullogne. He exhibited at the Salon between 1737 and 1761. He mainly engraved the work of Antoine Watteau (1735) and Philips Wouwermans (1619-1668), on the one hand as part of the translation of the cabinet of Pierre Crozat and on the other via Jean de Jullienne. Around 1739 he was said to be the King's engraver and had a workshop in rue Galande. He died in Paris on October 26, 1762.
