A fascinating and other-worldly collection of evocative Mid 20th Century pen and ink drawings by the Australian artist Mollie Paxton. Paxton depicts fantastical, and somewhat frightening creatures in a unique scrawl. These imagined creatures and figures bear some resemblance to the ones found in Hieronymus Bosch compositions, and contain numerous religious connotations and iconographic symbols.
Mollie Paxton was a painter known for her figurative and religious studies. Paxton was married to the Australian Expressionist Brian Midlane. As they both felt their work was not appreciated in Australia, the couple moved to the United Kingdom, where Mollie exhibited mainly in London. She was a self confessed follower of Georges Rouault and her painting is influenced by his work.
Sulis Fine Art also have an upcoming collection of figurative works on paper by Brian Midlane.
