Collection Information
Painter, illustrator and designer, born in Addiscombe, Surrey, who while staying in Edinburgh in 1944 was allowed by the principal Robert Lyon to attend classes at the Edinburgh College of Art where her teachers included John Maxwell. Later she attended Sidcup School of Art, 1944-46 where her teachers were Ruskin Spear and Robin Guthrie; then finally after World War II at the Royal College of Art, 1946-50, studying under E W Tristram, Edward Bawden, John Nash, Gilbert Spencer, Rodney Burn and Alan Sorrell. She was awarded a fourth year in the engraving school under Robert Austin. Hoddell assisted Bawden with his big 1951 Festival of Britain mural. Her group exhibitions included Royal Academy of Arts and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Brighton Art Gallery and with the Society of Sussex Painters. Hoddell's solo venues were The Grange, Rottingdean, 1963; County Town Gallery, Lewes, 1968; Barcombe, 1981-82, connected with National Gardens Scheme; and 1995, Lewes House. She has carried outer poster commissions from London Transport, Imperial Chemical Industries, Central Office of Information, General Post Office and the Dailly Telegraph. Her work is in the collections of HM The Queen and the London Transport Museum. Hoddell also illustrated books and designed book jackets details of which are below.
