Artist Biography

Mircea Marosin was a theatre designer, theatre director, painter and poet. Born in Bucharest in 1921, Marosin, a self-taught painter, had the first exhibition of his work just after graduating in humanities and world literature. He was asked to design for the Romanian national theatres in Bucharest and Lasi and went on to design more than 90 plays, ranging from Greek tragedies and Shakespeare to the then rather risky surreal new plays. He even directed some, often in addition to designing the sets and costumes.

Marosin was primarily influenced by Surrealism, which continued to dominate in Europe, and had influence worldwide. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico, worked to incorporate the ideas posed by Surrealism into their revolutionary political philosophies, developing a new kind of magic realism.
