A finely executed watercolour portrait of the English footballer Sir Stanley Matthews (1915-2000). Matthews was often regarded as one of the greatest players of the British game, he is the only player to have been knighted while still playing football, as well as being the first winner of both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards. Matthews' nicknames included "The Wizard of the Dribble" and "The Magician".
The artist has inscribed to the back of the portrait with the sitter's name. The painting has been presented in a handsome, contemporary gilt frame with laurel band molding and egg and dart strap work. The frame has a wide brushed gilt effect slip, glazing and a layered card mount.
