Mid 19th Century Oil - The Liability
Description
An utterly charming and humorous mid 19th Century interior scene filled with fun narrative in the wonderful naive style typical for these types of genre scenes. An altercation is unfolding in the early hours of the morning inside a rustic tavern. A drunkard has fallen asleep on a bench, having dropped a tankard which lies in shards on the floor. The landlord gesticulates to the drunkards companion who seems to be arguing the case and passing the buck.
As well as having a fun and engaging narrative, the painting has incredibly fine and delicate areas of detailing in the objects strewn about the place, particularly the glasses and jugs on the table which have a Dutch still life feel.
The painting is unsigned and presented in a simple gilt frame. There is a framer's label from Penzance on the reverse.
On canvas.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. There is a very small loss to the paint above the bench. The frame has general tarnishing.
