Description

An exquisite mid 19th Century portrait of James Addy, mother of Sidney Oldall Addy, English author and publisher. The portrait has a wonderful warmth which is not often seen in the typically austere portraits of this era. The artist has rendered his face in a gentle golden light with his jewelry picked out in soft highlights.

The painting has been presented in a wonderfully crafted gilt slip with beautifully carved foliate molding featuring scrolling acanthus leaves and fleur de lys. The slip has an oval inner window with beaded strap work. There is an inscription on the reverse stretchers of the canvas reading "Sarah Addy, mother of Sidney O. Addy." There is also a canvas stamp from Winsor & Newton that dates this painting to be circa 1860.

On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some areas of light bitumen deterioration to the surface and craquelure across the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of light restoration. The frame has light tarnishing to the gilt and minor cracking to the molding, typical for its age. There are two very small areas of restoration to the molding.
