Description
A striking 19th Century oil scene, showing the body of a majestic stag, crumpled on the rocks of a small waterfall. A lurcher hound stands to the left, having tracked the deer down. The artist has used wonderful delicacy in both animal's fur and features and the soft suggestion of ferns and foliage on the surrounding rocks. The painting is unsigned and presented in its original gilt slip. The artist has inscribed illegibly to the reverse of the slip. On canvas.Condition
The painting has some discolouration and darkening to the varnish. There are several areas of restoration with canvas repairs to the reverse and over painting at the front. The slip has some tarnishing and discolouration, typical for its age.
