Michael Oelman (B.1941) - Contemporary Etching A Sunless Sea
Description
An atmospheric and dynamic etching by Michael Oleman, showing his interpretation of a section of the poem "Kubla Khan by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The etching depicts the first verse of the poem:
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
The artist has pictured a dramatic sea with rocky outcrops under a dark and stormy sky. The etching is finished with coloured aquatint. The artist has signed, inscribed and numbered (75/75) to the lower edge. The painting has been presented in a contemporary wood effect frame with glazing.
On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and slight undulation to the wove. The frame has some scratching to the surface at the lower edge.

Artist Biography
Michael Oelman was born in Llandudno, Wales, in 1941.
1964 to 1965
He then studied etching and lithography at the Central and Slade Schools of Art (part-time).
Michael was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study at at S. W. Hayter’s in Paris
1967 to1969
Lecturer in Printmaking at Doncaster College of Art, Yorkshire, and his work handled exclusively by Gorner & Millard Art Gallery. His work was later also handled by Anderson O’Day and Christie's Contemporary Arts.
During the early 1970s he was an artist at New Crane Studio, Wapping, London.
Since 1979 he has lived in Suffolk, England working from his own studio.
