Artist Biography

Born June, 1940 Michael Long was educated locally at Redland Hill House during his early years. He later studied at the West of England College of Art and apprenticed at E. and A. Robinson in 1957, as a Designer and Reproduction Artist. Having been a Teacher at Brunel Technical College and latterly a freelance illustrator, Long chooses to paint mostly in oils and gouache. His work is primarily landscapes and seascapes, which he has exhibited in a number of galleries in the West Country, including the RWA. His main works are a showcase of the green lands that surround his home turf, accomplished in Somerset and the Cotswolds. In fact, it is down to these stunning tributes to the Cotswold landscape that, in 1995, he became one of the founding members of the Dobunni Painters, a group of independent, well established artists in Southern England. He is a member of the Society of Chartered Designers and a past President of Bristol Savages Art Club. Over the years, Michael has had several one-man shows, the most notable of which was at the Amersham Galleries, entitled The Royal Cotswolds. He has Marine Paintings in the John Hill Marine Collection, Charles Hill and Sons, ship builders in Bristol.
