Description
A folio of 13 original 1920 etchings entitled 'Melodien' inspired by classical music, by Meta Cohn-Hendel. These fine etchings illustrate music by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mozart,, Schubert, Beethoven, Grieg, Haydn and Bach. A variety of landscape and natural forms have been artfully combined with pieces of written musical score. Each etching is signed, inscribed and numbered 6/154 in pencil, with tissue paper protection. Published by Wohlgemuth & Lissner, Berlin, 1921. Bound within a hessian folio holding loose interior pages and an extensive introduction booklet written in German. Each page measures approximately 36 x 52 cm, page sizes vary. Signed and inscribed. On wove.Condition
In good condition overall. Some etchings have light discolouration, and minor creases to the edges of the paper mounts. Deckled edges. Some of the protective tissue leaves are creased, and there is some discolouration to the introduction booklet and outer folio.

Artist Biography
Meta Cohn-Hendel (1883-1970) was a painter and printmaker, born Meta Cohen (Cohn) in Berlin, Germany on July 7, 1883. Meta later adopted the name of her finance, Hendel, after he died in World War I. Meta Hendel studied painting and graphic arts at Berlin and Paris academies. She continued her studies at the Académie Moderne in Paris studying with Fernand Leger and Amédée Ozenfant.
Hendel was a member of the California Society of Etchers and the San Francisco Women Artists. She exhibited with these organizations, as well as the San Francisco Art Association. Her first comprehensive exhibition was mounted in San Francisco at the Legion of Honor. Hendel had solo exhibitions at the City of Paris, Raymond and Raymond Gallery, Labaudt Gallery, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco, as well as solo exhibitions in Munich, Berlin, Budapest, Florence, Milan, London, and New York.
Her work is represented in the collections of Mills College, Oakland Museum of California, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Kupferstichkabinette in Berlin, and Museo d'Arte Moderna, Gabinetto delle Stampe, and Lyceum in Milan.
