Mesdames Morter - Original Early 20th Century Photograph. Photograph laid down on backing paper, which is signed and inscribed 'London'. Signed and inscribed. In fine condition. The two Morter sisters were English photographers who were very successful in their day and widely published in the 1920s, but have seldom been heard of since. They, or one of them (it has been speculated that they were perhaps twins), would dress up, arrange their hair and makeup, and pose as personalities such as "The Idealist," "Disturber of the Peace," "Progress," "Sleep," "The Builder". Their pictures are madly romantic, the expressions often exaggerated. They were highly skilled and their silver bromide prints have a lovely quality akin to charcoal. The Keith de Lellis gallery in New York has a collection of Mesdames Morter prints. In an exhibition at the Houk-Friedman gallery in the 1990s they were marketed as early precursors of Cindy Sherman.
