Artist Biography

Max Papart (1911-1994) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator, and collage artist. Born in Marseille, Papart began drawing at an early age. He studied at the École du Louvre and was already exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants by the next year. He would also exhibit at the Salon de Mai and Salon des Comparaisons. During the war, he returned to Marseille and studied at the Auzias Academy whilst also fighting with the French Resistance. In 1950, he moved to Paris, where he joined a group of avant-garde artists. He continued to establish his reputation, and in 1953 held a major solo exhibition at Monique de Groote, and the following year began exhibiting at Galerie Paul Pétridès as well as participating in the annual École de Paris. During this time, his style became more abstract, drawing on the Cubists as well as the visual cultures of the Mediterranean and the Americas.
