Artist Biography

Max Bergmann (1884-1955) was a German painter who studied in Berlin and Munich, becoming a master student of animal painter Heinrich von Zügel in 1906. During a 1910 study trip to Paris, he met Marcel Duchamp. In 1912 he settled in Haimhausen, marrying Dorothea Karstadt in 1914, with whom he had three children, including son Klaus, who also became a painter. After serving in World War I, Bergmann purchased the Buttersack estate in 1916 and opened a private painting school there in 1925. He regularly exhibited, including at the Haus der Kunst, and spent summers painting in Wöhrt am Rhein, a renowned village for plein air painters. He died in 1955 and was buried in Ottershausen.
