Maurice Sheppard, PRWS, NEAC, MA(RCA) was born at Llangwm in Pembrokeshire in 1947. He is the first Welsh President of the Royal Watercolour Society (founded in 1804), and was its youngest President since 1819. Sheppard studied at the Kingston College of Art under Alfred Heyworth RWS and Wilfred Fairclough RE), and the Royal College of Art under Robert Buhler RA, Donald Hamilton Fraser RA and Ruskin Spear RA. At the RA he won the British Institution Award from the Royal Academy in 1971 and a David Murray Landscape Award in 1972 when his mentor/tutor was Olwyn Bowey RA. He was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1974 and served as President from 1984 – 1987. He was elected to Membership of the New English Art Club in 2000. He has exhibited his works widely, including at the RA Summer Exhibition regularly until 2009, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Museum and Art Galleries of Wales, Cardiff; Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and many others across the UK.
