Martin Hardie RE RSW (1875-1952) was a painter, printmaker, and curator, born in Kings Cross, London. He was a nephew of Charles Martin Hardie, the Scottish painter, and also of John Pettie, in whose studio he spent many hours of his youth. He studied etching under Frank Short at the RCA and also attended Cambridge University, after which he joined the staff of the V&A where he became Keeper of Paintings. In his own work, he rarely drew figures, concentrating on the landscapes he found when travelling.
Hardie wrote many books including 'Watercolour Painting in Britain' and was created CBE in 1935. He was a member of the Art Workers' Guild and exhibited at the RA, RE, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, RSW, RSMA, and NEAC and was elected RE in 1920 and RSW in 1934 and was also a member of the Imperial Arts League and showed with the Sole Bay Group. Examples of his work are in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada, Ottawa, Museums Sheffield, NPG, V&A. and the GAC.
