Artist Biography
paint, illustrator and printmaker, born in Birmingham. Martin Caulkin attended Sutton Coldfield College of Art 1960-63 and Birmingham School of Art 1963-65 where he specialised in illustration. In 1969 he exhibited for the first time at the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. He has also exhibited, with his grandfather, Ferdinand Caulkin, several times at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and in 1970 he exhibited at the Bull's Eye Gallery, Lichfield. Like his wife Anne Caulkin (Cherry) he has shown in Kensington at the Leighton House Museum. The influences and interests in his work are the history of the Old West (Frederick Remington and George Catlin) from which have emerged various mountain men trappers and Indians. Also a source of inspiration are Norse and Icelandic legends and poem sagas. Caulkin was elected an Associate of the RBSA in 1975 and a full member in 1983. In the same year he was elected RI.
