He was trained by Marius Guindon at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, he then became a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens and Fernand Cormon in Paris. After the First World War, he moved to the Rive Neuve on the south bank of the Old Port. In his paintings, Gianelli creates simple scenes with harmonious arrangements of colour, in the manner of André Derain. It is customary to divide the work of this Provencal artist into two periods: Gianelli young, dynamic and adventurous, a grand master of the implementation, with trips to French overseas territories before the last world war. He obtained a travel scholarship in 1922 and between 1924 and 1930, travelled to the Congo, the Caribbean, Cuba and Haiti. From 1931 to 1934 he was in Guadeloupe where he received orders for the interior design of several public and religious buildings, including the parish church of Saint André de Morne-à-water, the chamber Agriculture Pointe-à-Pitre , the city of Marie-Galante . In 1931 he participated in the Colonial Exhibition, and the Expo in 1937 where he decorated pavilions of Guadeloupe Islands, Provence and Navy. In 1938, he travelled to Madagascar where he also decorated public buildings. Antoine Gianelli did not return to France until 1946. In Marseille, he attended the "painters Péano", a new generation of bohemians who moved to Arcenaulx, and which included among others Ambrogiani Pierre, Antoine Ferrari, Hubert Aicardi, Arsène Sari, Jo Berto, René Seyssaud, Auguste Chabaud , Antoine Serra . The city of Marseille dedicated to Antoine Gianelli a retrospective at the Museum of Old Marseille 1981-82, a year before his death. His works are in various public collections including: The Musée du Quai Branly, Paris; Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris; Centre Pompidou, MNAM-CCI, Paris; and Museum of Fine Arts, Marseille.Size
