Description

A beautifully delicate Victorian portrait of two siblings. Information to the reverse of the frame indicates the possibility that the children are John and Rose Herschel, the children of the astronomer, John Herschel (1792 -1871). The information also attributes this painting to be by the one of the older Herschel sisters, Margaret Louisa Herschel (1834–1861). The information is a note from Eleanor Hardcastle, the granddaughter of John Herschel, stating this is likely to be one of her Aunts (namely Rose Herschel) from her memory of what she looked like.

The painting is unsigned and presented in a 20th Century gilt effect frame with crisp card mount with circle inner window. The backing panel to the frame comes from the original mid 19th Century frame and retains the original framer's label from Holloway & Sons (in business 1835-1875). The note from Eleanor Hardcastle and a second note with the artist attribution are attached to the backing board.

On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame and mount are in fine condition.
