A wonderful early 20th century study of two well dressed gentlemen walkers taking refreshments outside the Star Inn. A young waitress holds a tray of drinks while the gentlemen converse with her and smoke cigarettes. The bright colours used by the artist perfectly capture a warm summer's day in the English countryside, with expressive brushwork emulating the dappled sunlight. A row of thatched cottages line the path with figures in the distance.
A label to the reverse reads 'on loan from Mardon Son & Hall'. This idyllic scene was possibly commissioned for the tobacco company, or could be the original design for an advertisement by Mardon Son & Hall.
This delightful oil is very well presented in a double card mount and substantial gilt frame. On canvas not on stretchers.
Unsigned.Overall the condition is very good. With some minor surface dirt. Very small marks to the frame that have been overpainted with gilt paint.

Mardo's was established in 1823 when John Price established a small printing and engraving business in Bristol. In 1846, Price’s business partner John Harris invited his brother-in-law James Mardon to join the firm. James Mardon purchased two lithographic presses in 1849 and together with his son Heber Mardon the family firm grew into a large printing and packaging business. In the 1860s, the family firm – now with a brother-in-law on board – became known as Mardon, Son and Hall. The company was acquired by the Imperial Tobacco Company and became responsible for the production of most of their cigarette cards.
