Marcus de Bye - Set of 4 Original 17th Century Etching. A set of 4 sheets of engravings of goats, 2 on each sheet. Three are on laid. One is inscribed 'P Potter inv, M de Bye fec, N Visscher excud N 9'. Unsigned. There are scattered stains and the edges of the sheets are tatty with some tears.Paulus Potter (1625-1654) is arguably Holland's most heralded animal artist. He died at the age of twenty-nine so his oeuvre is small in number. Both a painter and printmaker he created only eighteen etchings. Marcus De Bye (1639-1688) was a painter engraver from The Hague, pupil of the painter Jacob van der Does. He is better known for his etchings than for his paintings, among them fine work after Paulus Potter. Shortly after Potter's death, Marcus De Bye began etching sets of animal studies after this master's drawings. The first set was published around 1657 and at least five others followed based solely upon Potter's designs. The sizes for the series ranged from eight to sixteen plates.
