Description

A very fine still life study of a vase of summer flowers by the artist ;Marcella Smith. Wonderfully presented in a washline mount and vintage effect frame. Lanham Art Gallery, St. Ives label to the reverse. Signed. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing. Small marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

Marcella Smith was a painter, born at East Molesey, Surrey. Her clergyman father emigrated to Canada and later relocated to Washington resulting in Marcella attending the Corcoran School, Washington and the Philadelphia School of Design before spending some time in Paris. She was an elected member of the SWA and also showed at the RA, RBA, RMS and the St. Ives Society of Artists. Elected RI in 1956 she is best remembered as a painter of flower pieces. Her work is held by the GAC, RWA and the Royal Collection. She moved to St. Ives in 1914 and spent many years there as a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists and with her close friend Dorothea Sharp ran the now defunct Lanham Gallery in St. Ives from 1929
