A delightfully bucolic mid 19th Century oil showing a man and woman on a country path, ladened with baskets, driving a small flock of sheep along the dirt track. The scene is framed with dark trees and the peak of a hazy mountain can be seen in the distance. The painting bears the signature "J. F. Gilbert. The painting is certainly in the style of the English landscape painter, Joseph Francis Gilbert, with similar motifs, subject matter, composition and execution.
The painting has been presented in a 20th Century gilt frame.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is craquelure to the surface. There are two canvas repairs at the reverse, one of which is somewhat visible at the front with a shallow divot around the area of the damage. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. The frame has some areas of abrasion to the gilt surface.

Joseph Francis Gilbert was born in 1792 to Edward Gilbert.
Gilbert was known for painting landscapes and scenery in Sussex, England. the resided in Chichester for several years and painted a number of scenes at Goodwood Racecourse.
A painting by Gilbert is displayed in the tapestry bedroom at Uppark House, it depicts the view of the village of South Harting from the house.
Gilbert died on 25 September 1855, at 17 Hopton's Almshouses, Green Walk in Southwark, London.
