A precise and masterly watercolour still life composition with ecclesiastical books, by the Victorian artist M. MacLaren. Central to the frame is a book entitled 'Promoting Sermons', along with four other tomes, blue flowers and a shallow dish on a highly ornate shelf with foliate wall behind, likely to be a church interior. The use of sharp lines and brown hues contrasts with the vibrant blue floral arrangement and the subtle treatment of shadow. Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame with wide card mount and gilt beading, as shown in the photographs provided above. Signed and dated. On wove.

In fine condition. Clean mount and frame, with minor marks and scuffing to the edges of the frame.
