M. Dawson - 1911 Watercolour Three Dainty Destinies
Description
A Romantic early 20th Century watercolour with nods to the style and motifs of the Pre-Raphaelites. The scene shows a Italiante colonnade with checkerboard floor, where three red haired women sit in flowing blush pink gowns, working together on a loom. At the reverse of the frame is a handwritten copy of the poem "The Three Dainty Destinies" by the poet Robert Herrick. The three Destinies (or Fates). The Fates were normally personified as three very old women who spin the threads of human destiny. Their names were Clotho (Spinner), Lachesis (Allotter), and Atropos (Inflexible). One draws out a thread (someone's destiny or fate), the next spins it and the final Fate cuts it, ending the mortal life.
This pretty lyrical artwork is signed and dated to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a wood frame with gold mount and galzing.
On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and fading. There is some light foxing. The gold mount has some tarnishing and the frame has small losses at three corners and general surface scuffing.
