Etcher and designer Lucien Gautier was born in Aix-en-Provence, where he studied art under Marius Reynaud, followed by studies in Paris with Léon Gaucherel. He worked as a journeyman etcher in Paris reproducing the work of Corot and others, but by 1875 began producing original work that was highly praised, earning him medals and awards in 1884, 1894, and 1900. He is best known for his etchings of Paris and other French cities, and also created views of London, Rome, and Venice. His work is widely held by French institutions and in numerous private collections. Gautier died in Aix-en-Provence.
