The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With a number of losses and tears to the edges of the page, visible in the above images, the largest measuring 3cm. There are also some foxing spots to the page.

Painter, etcher, illustrator and poster designer also known as Louis Whirter or Weirter born in Edinburgh, Scotland to a German musician father. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools as well as in Paris and was an early member of the Society of Scottish Artists. The 1901 census has Louis living in Battersea, London and working as a 'black & white' artist. The 1911 census records him living in Baldock, Hertfordshire with his wife and two children working as an 'artist painter'. During World War I, he attained the rank of Captain in the 2nd London Scottish attached to the Royal Flying Corps. He was a balloonist with the airborne observational group, flying and sketching over France. He also designed posters for the Underground Group 1931-1932 examples of which are in the collections of the London Transport Museum. Louis Weirter died in South Kensington, London.
