The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration and light foxing. Two tears to the upper right, one 2.5cm and one 1cm. Wear and losses to the frame leaves it with a distressed finish.

Louis Hilaire Carrand (1821-1899) was a French painter. He is considered a direct precursor to the Impressionists. Together with François Vernay and Auguste Ravier, he formed a small group of Lyon painters close to the Barbizon School. Like the Impressionists, he shared their interest in expressive, painterly brushwork. However, unlike the Impressionists who favoured bright and luminous atmospheres, Carrand was drawn to misty atmospheres, the grey and silvery tones associated with spring or autumn, and the effects of light at dawn and dusk.
