Description

A hand-coloured lithograph by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) after David Roberts RA RBA (1796-1864) depicting Convent of St Catherine at Mount Sinai. Roberts undertook a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan, and Lebanon from August 1838 to May 1839, when he would have drawn this scene. On his return to Britain, Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of 'The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia', originally published as 'Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria', 1842-1849 and 'Egypt & Nubia' series. Presented in a white and taupe double mount with gold detailing and a wooden frame with a gilt-effect inner edge. Inscribed with the date, title, and signature of David Roberts in plate. There is an identical impression in the Wellcome Collection dated 1849. On wove.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration and some slight dents to the frame. Overall well-presented and in good condition.
