David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter. He was initially apprenticed as a house painter and decorator, before working as a set painter for a circus and the Pantheon theatre in his native Edinburgh. He then worked as a set painter for the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh, where he met the artist William Clarkson Stanfield. Roberts' love for landscape painting developed, and in 1821 the Fine Arts Institution of Edinburgh accepted three of his paintings. He moved to London, continuing to work as a set painter whilst also establishing himself as a fine artist. Roberts is best known for his 'The Holy Land' series. He travelled in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly Egypt, from 1838 to 1839, where he produced a great number of sketches that would form the basis for the series of 247 lithographs. Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe (1806-1885) to produce the series, which was published in six volumes between 1842 and 1849.
