Signs of wear consistent with age. Light dirtying to the surface of the painting and yellowing to the varnish layer. There are some areas of craquelure and minor damage to the upper right-hand corner of the canvas. The gilt frame is in good overall condition. Two moulding repairs can be seen to the upper right and lower right ornament.

Born in Bern in 1839, Louis Aimé Japy emerged as one of the finest naturalist painters of the 19th century and a leading representative of the Barbizon School. He studied under Louis Français (1814-1897) and the era's most celebrated master, Camille Corot (1796-1875), who regarded Japy as his most gifted pupil. From Corot's tutelage, Japy developed his signature lightness of touch—an almost ethereal quality evident in his tree depictions. However, when painting dense forest undergrowth, he employed a more substantial and deliberate brushwork technique reminiscent of Jules Dupré (1811-1889), who alongside Théodore Rousseau pioneered the Barbizon movement. Japy made his Salon debut in 1864 and continued exhibiting there until World War I. His achievements included a medal at the 1873 Salon and membership in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883. International recognition followed with silver medals at both the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles.
