Artist Biography

Lorna Ponsonby Llewellyn Innes nee Bing (1897-1993) was a British landscape and still life painter in oils. Lorna was born on 16th May 1897 in Pernambues, Brazil, the daughter of Edward Lewis Byng and Lois Greenwood Byng. Lorna’s father changed his name from Byng to Bing in 1925, to escape antisemitism and anti-German feelings after the First World War. Her mother had been involved in the Newlyn School artist's group of the late 19th century, when she was a dressmaker, living in Fore Street, Newlyn, Cornwall. They took in artist lodgers, including both Frederick Millard and Ernest Blackburne.

In 1924, at Chelsea, Lorna married Otto Struckmeyer, who also changed his name around 1925, to Innes. Throughout her life, Lorna painted for pleasure and was friends with numerous artists, and enjoyed a full career in the arts.

In later life, her home was Turleigh Grange, in the village of Turleigh near Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. It was full of artwork by various artists and some by her own hand. Lorna donated work by her cousin, Arthur Ralph Middleton Todd RA (1891-1966) to the Royal Museum Cornwall, along with that of other Newlyn artists including Frederick Millard, Frederick Hall and Caroline Trelawny, as well as several by John Lees Suthers.
