Liu Haiming's striking woodblock depicts a pair of mysterious figures walking away from a shadowy street scene and into the moonlit night. A bold and modern print, Liu Haiming has sensitively applied a contemporary and graphic approach to this narrative subject matter showing his expert knowledge of the woodblock medium. The print has been inscribed, signed, dated and editioned 22/70 in pencil to the lower edge, with an artist stamp visible to the lower right corner. On wove.

Condition

There is a large loss and 4cm tear to the upper left edge. With a further loss to the lower right corner, two minor tears and pinhole marks to the corners. There is discolouration across the page, as shown.

Artist Biography

The painter and printmaker Liu Haiming, 劉海明版畫 was born in 1954 in Shanxi province, North China. From 1973-1977 he worked as a coal miner before graduating from the highly selective CAFA in 1981. In 1986 he was sponsored by Scottish Arts Council as an artist in residence, continuing to live in Europe until 1996. He now teaches printmaking in North China, exhibiting his work in a number of leading international galleries. Achieving notoriety within the UK, Liu Haming sold a collection of prints, calligraphy and papercuts to the British Museum in the 1990s. He was also included in a group exhibition of ‘Modern Chinese Prints’ in The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The exhibition mainly included examples of his early woodcuts which depicted aspects of daily life in rural China, as well as more recent work.
