Description

This charming mid-twentieth-century still life by Leslie Charles Boyce (1892-1989) features a ceramic jug, glass bottle, and rolling pin arranged on a pink cloth. Another still life study - depicting a teapot, metal jug, and wooden tray - is painted on the reverse of the board. Both compositions are executed with broad brushstrokes, yet Boyce balances his expressive painting style with careful consideration of light and shadow. Unsigned. On board.

Condition

Light abrasions to the surface and wear around the edges of the board. Slight separation in one corner between the two boards, which have been stuck together.

Size

32 x 25cm (12.6" x 9.8")

Collection Information

Leslie Charles Boyce was a British painter about whom little is known. He appears to have favoured oil as a medium, capturing his diverse subjects with a particular lightness of feeling, achieved with gentle brushwork and a soft palette. His work includes both still life and landscape views, with a penchant for florals. Also in the collection are several figurative ink sketches and small colourful designs.
