Printmaker and illustrator born in Ipswich who attended Ipswich School of Art where he studied under George Rushton and at the Slade School of Fine Art where his tutors included Henry Tonks. Squirrel was elected RE in 1919, RI in 1931 and RWS in 1941. He also exhibited at the Abbey Gallery, Connell & Sons, FAS, GI, MAFA, NEAC, RA, RHA, RSA, Sole Bay Group and at the Walker Art Gallery. He was briefly a member and exhibitor at Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1932 but was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1914 until his death. In 1929, he succeeded Charles Edward Baskett as a teacher of etching at his Ipswich alma mater where he remained until 1940.
Squirrel was awarded gold medals at the International Printmakers’ exhibitions at Los Angeles in 1925 and 1930 and he produced posters and carriage prints for British Railways. He also illustrated several travel books some of which are detailed below. An etcher and illustrator whose orderly style sometimes recalls that of J.S. Cotman, for, although he suffered from deafness, a speech impediment and nervousness, his hand rarely faltered, his topographical views having a remarkable firmness and clarity of definition. He is renowned for his aquatints and etchings of beauty spots and architecture in East Anglia, the Lake District and Scotland. His son Martin Squirrel was also a gifted artist who died young in 1950. Leonard's work is represented in several public collections including Brighton & Hove Museum & Art Gallery, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service and the National Railway Museum. An advert featured a Squirrel aquatint appeared in Artwork, Autumn 1928.
