On wove.

Artist Biography

Leonard Manasseh OBE RA PPRWA FRIBA FCSD was an architect and artist from a Sephardi Jewish family. Originally from Baghdad Manasseh was born in Eden Hall Singapore which is today the home of the British High Commission. He studied at the Architectural Association and by 1941 was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. During World War II he served as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm. From 1946-48 he was an assistant architect at Hertfordshire County Council Architects Department and following that he became a senior architect for the Stevenage Development Corporation. He came to prominence at the Festival of Britain and went on to be one of the leading British architects of the 1960's, designing private houses and offices as well as major public commissions. In the 1950's he established his own practice following his success by his achieving the Festival of Britain Award and during the 1950's taught at his alma mater the Architectural Association. From 1960 to 1965 he became President of the Architectural Association and has served as a council member on numerous architectural organisations. In 1982 he was awarded an OBE and in 1989 he was elected President of the RWA.

Leonard Manasseh's partnership has won several awards for architecture including the RIBA Award, Southern Region in 1973, the Structural Steel Design Award in 1974 and the same year the National Heritage 'Museum of the Year Award'. In 1975 they received the European Architectural Heritage Year Award and in the same year and The Times Conservation Award for Wellington Country Park. He was elected an Associate of the RA in 1976 and a full member in 1979. A keen art collector and artist in his own right, his paintings show a similar exuberance and delicacy to his buildings. In recent years he exhibited his paintings at Lauderdale House near his home that he designed in Highgate. North London. His many public commissions included the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. His work is invariably signed with his initials in a monogram 'LM'.
