Description
An accomplished still life study by Leonard Ashford depicting three herring on a plate. The choice of subject matter and dramatic chiaroscuro lighting seems to reference the still life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly those of Isaac van Duynen and Clara Peeters, who frequently included dead fish in their compositions. In these paintings, dead fish often served as memento mori. Regardless of any symbolic meaning, fish can be beautiful in their own right. Their shimmering scales provide artists with an opportunity to demonstrate their skill in rendering light and colour, as Ashford has masterfully done here. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a contemporary black frame. On board.Condition
Slight discolouration and surface dirt. Scratches and scuffs across the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame is in fine condition.
