An interesting Victorian scrapbook album, with many engravings of Classical scenes, portraits, landscapes and several photographs of Malta. Keeping a scrap-book was a popular 19th century pastime, especially for women and children. The Oxford English Dictionary, which defines a scrapbook as a “blank book in which pictures, newspaper cuttings, and the like are pasted for preservation," suggests that 1854 is the earliest known date of the word "scrap-book" being used in print although other methods of collecting mementos were popular since the 18th century.
Each engraving has been cropped and pasted into a cloth bound album, as shown, with over 35 pages of prints. There is an inscription to the inside of the front board, reading 'To Darling Little Diana, given to her by dear Miss Pickard'.
Unsigned and inscribed.The album binding is tight, with scuffing and wear to the corners and edges of the cloth boards. The pages are slightly brittle, with losses to the corners of pages and some tears around the edges. All the prints have been pasted into the album.
