Description
A beautifully detailed and impressively crafted glazed, frame from the Aesthetic movement period (late 19thC). The frame has a gilt finish with black waxed details. The carving shows ornate ivy with black berries at each corner. Ivy represents steadfast and constant love, particularly the love of friendship, so this frame may have been either a gift to a friend or contained a portrait of a friends. There are two cherubim surrounded by sun rays at the top. The frame sports delicate beaded strap work between the botanical corners. Overall Size: 45cm x 36cm. Window Opening: 31.5cm x 27.5cm. Rebate: 35.8cm x 31.6cm.Condition
The frame is in remarkably good condition given its delicate carving. There are very small unnoticeable losses to the ivy at the top two corners and one black berry is missing from the right edge. There is some tarnishing to the gilt but nothing out of character for a frame of this age.
