A wonderful example of a late 19th Century oil portrait showing the martyred Dominican monk, Girolamo Savonarola (1452–23 May 1498). He was an Italian Dominican friar from Ferrara and preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He was known for his prophecies of civic glory, the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule, and the exploitation of the poor. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood and a new Cyrus from the north who would reform the Church.
The portrait shows the monk with a serious expression, in his hooded habit. The painting has been presented in an ornate, early 20th Century frame with detailed scrolling foliate details and hatched cove. The frame is finished with a gold mount with oval inner window. The framed painting makes an overall, charming object, with excellent proportions in the frame and an intriguing subject in the portrait.
On thin wood panel.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is an area of craquelure to the lower left of the portrait. The frame has an area of restoration to the molding at the lower right corner. The frame has some tarnishing to the gilt and some splitting to the interior corners.
