Description

An accomplished aquatint showing Jesus knocking on a door under moonlight (a popular motif in the 19th Century). The portrait has traits of Romanticism shown in the colour palette and stylised facial features. The print is presented in a gilt cassetta frame with botanical ornamentation and scalloped strap work. There is a burnished inner window slip. Unsigned. On laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are several white marks across the painting, the largest being at the bottom over the figures foot. The frame has several losses that have been repaired along the bottom edge. The inner slip has cracks on three side and There is some chipping on the bottom edge of the inner window.
