Large Framed Mid 19th Century Oil - Shipwrecked
Description
A dramatic Victorian oil depicting a ship struggling against the stormy sea. The artist has captured a sailing boat crashing against the coastline, while figures on shore try to rescue those on board the sinking ship. The artist has masterfully depicted the rough, dark sea water with expressive, loose brushwork; emphasizing the untamable nature of the sea. Finely presented in a large gilt frame with scrolling leaf detail and swept corners. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age. The painting has been restored in areas and relined. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting to the lower left and right corner and edges. A larger area of restoration is also visible under UV light to the lower left hand side, (close to the ships on the horizon) where a 7cm tear has been repaired. The restoration work has been carried out to a very high standard. Frame appears to be in good condition.
