An amicable portrait of a middle aged Quaker, this fine work is set against a deep, brooding crimson background. The lady is handsomely dressed in a large lace bonnet and lace shawl, typical for an American Quaker in the early part of the 19th Century. The portrait has been finished with immaculate and precise detail. The artist presents the female quaker with a peaceful but worldly aura, and her rather kind eyes reflect the reputation of her Protestant denomination in the period.
Well presented in a substantial 19th century gilt wooden frame, with acanthus leaf mouldings and egg-and-dart running pattern. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
The artwork has undergone some restoration work to the paint surface and to the rear of the canvas due to paint loss and tears. There is some undulation and distortion to the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals several areas of over painting, mainly to the right eye and side of the face.
