A captivating Rubensian scene by Belgian artist Lambert Joseph Mathieu (1804-1861). After the princess Ariadne is left on the island of Naxos by her lover Theseus she is discovered by the God Bacchus, who carries her towards a group of revellers dancing outside a temple. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including a canvas tear repair and overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure. Faint impressions from the stretchers visible. Scuffs and cracking to the frame, as well as a hole to the lower edge.
