Collection Information

Lady Gordon 1772-1867 (née Julia Isabella Levina Bennet) is one of the best documented of J.M.W. Turner's few known pupils, receiving instruction in 1797. It is as a pupil and also as a patron of Turner that she is usually remembered. In the 1820s she commissioned from him an oil painting of her seaside villa at Niton on the Isle of Wight which Turner is known to have based on her sketches. She also took lessons from Thomas Girtin. In 1805 Julia Bennet married General Sir James Willoughby Gordon (1772-1851). The Gordons were important patrons of David Wilkie. In 1834, Wilkie wrote to Sir Willoughby asking leave to propose marriage to their daughter, Julia Emily Gordon, but his request was refused. Provenance: has been through Christie's
