Artist Biography

Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator, best known for his etchings of animals. He was born Kurt Ernst Meyer on 10 April 1895 in Leipzig, and in 1916 took the artist's name Meyer-Eberhardt, adding his mother's maiden name; he also signed himself Curt. He grew up in Erfurt from 1899 and trained between 1912 and 1917 at the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Fine Arts in Weimar under Max Thedy, Theodor Hagen and Walther Klemm, becoming Klemm's master student in 1916. In the winter semester of 1919/20 he returned to Weimar to attend the newly founded Bauhaus, taking figure and portrait classes with Lyonel Feininger. He settled permanently in Munich, and a frequently repeated account holds that he declined a professorship at Weimar in order to devote himself entirely to animal subjects. His reputation rests on drypoint and copperplate etchings of dogs, cats, foals, fawns, foxes and hares, rendered with close naturalistic observation and often a touch of humour or sentiment. These were published from 1916 onwards by the Hanfstaengl Verlag in Munich and remained popular long after his death; the Munich printing house continued to issue impressions from his original copper plates, which is why restrikes circulate widely alongside pencil-signed lifetime prints.
