A delicate woodcut print by the Japanese artist ;Kono Bairei, depicting a seascape with birds. There is a 'Japanese Gallery' label to the reverse. Artist's stamp to the lower right-hand corner. Well-presented in a blue card mount and in a gilt effect frame. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor surface marks. Very small abrasion marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

Kono Bairei (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator, and art teacher. He was born (as Yasuda Bairei) and lived in Kyoto.[2] Bairei ;was a member of the Ukiyo-e school and was a master of kacho-e painting (depictions of birds and flowers) in the Meiji period of Japan.
