Kitagawa Utamaro (1754–1806) - Early 19thC Japanese Woodblock, Hour Of The Horse

A fine 19th Century restrike of the original woodblock by Kitagawa Utamaro. The image comes from the series "A Sundial of Maidens," which is a series of scenes showing the lives of high ranking women in Japan. This particular ukiyo-e print shows two beautiful women at an ancient bath house. One dries her hair with a towel while the other rings out a cloth. The artist has signed to the left edge and inscribed with the series title to the upper right. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some water damage to the lower left corner.

36 x 24cm (14.2" x 9.4")
